Front: A Torch
(hopefully with a hand holding it up)
Why?
The coin should communicate “Thank you for being a light to me”
I’m very open to other things that communicate this message (candle, lighthouse, sunrise, etc…). However, this is the message to communicate and a torch does that as well as anything.
Emily wanted it to be a torch
While I’m open to other things that communicate this message (candle, lighthouse, sunrise, etc…). Emily (my partner in this project) liked the idea of a torch and drew the initial sketch, so unless there’s an exceptional reason why another option is better, a torch it will be.
A torch is not merely a symbol of light, it is also a symbol of something which is carried.
Thus, the symbolism is not merely “thank you for being a light” but also “thank you for being one who carries light”. It’s subtle, but it’s there.
Because of this, the original sketch includes a hand. This deserves further information…
The angle of the hand is important. It should be angled as if is lifting the torch toward the viewer of the coin - not coming from either side.
Emily wants a hand there, so I want the hand there. However, hands can be tricky. Add to that that we’re not merely sketching, but pressing metal, plating, engraving, etc… If the hand is not up to the quality of the rest of the design, we will go without it. This is all to say, let’s try to go with the hand, but if it is better without, we’ll go without.
